Mogadishu, May 18, 2025<\/strong> \u2014 The Third Annual Meeting of the National Steering Committee on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS)<\/strong> was successfully held in Mogadishu, bringing together representatives from the Federal Government, Federal Member States, local authorities, and development partners to review national progress and set new priorities for Somalia\u2019s civil registration system.<\/p>\n

The 2025 session focused on the theme:<\/p>\n

\u201cStrengthening Legal Identity for All: Scaling Up the Digital Civil Registration System in Somalia.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the meeting, members reviewed key milestones achieved since the launch of the national CRVS initiative, including the successful implementation of a unified digital registration system<\/strong> in more than 20 pilot districts<\/strong> across all Federal Member States. This pilot phase marked a significant step toward modernizing service delivery for birth and death registration in Somalia.<\/p>\n

After a comprehensive review of the results and lessons learned, the Steering Committee officially approved the second phase of the CRVS digital system<\/strong>, which will expand the unified platform to additional districts nationwide. The approved scale-up aims to ensure equitable access to civil registration services, improve data integration across government institutions, and strengthen coordination for vital statistics reporting.<\/p>\n

Stakeholders commended the progress made under the leadership of the Civil Registration Services General Directorate (CRGD) of the Ministry of Interior. They highlighted the system\u2019s contribution to improving service delivery, institutional accountability, and the generation of reliable national data.<\/p>\n

Representatives from development partners, including UNICEF, IOM, UNHCR, UNFPA, and Italy<\/strong>, reaffirmed their continued support for the CRVS scale-up, noting its critical role in advancing SDG Target 16.9 providing legal identity for all, including birth registration.<\/strong> They also emphasized the importance of sustained capacity-building, data quality assurance, and community awareness to ensure that no one is left unregistered.<\/p>\n

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from all stakeholders to work collaboratively toward achieving universal registration coverage and to strengthen the link between civil registration and vital statistics for effective governance and social planning.<\/p>\n
